Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • He said me he was tired.

He told me he was tired. / He said to me that he was tired.

The verb 'say' requires the preposition 'to' before an indirect object (the person being spoken to).

  • How do you say this word in English?

What is this word in English? / How do you pronounce this word?

While 'How do you say...' is common, learners often confuse it with 'What do you call...' for objects.

  • She said me a story.

    She told me a story.

We 'tell' stories, jokes, or the truth, rather than 'saying' them.

  • I say you hello.

I say hello to you. / I said hello.

Greetings are 'said' but cannot take a direct person object without 'to'.

  • What did he say you?

What did he say to you?

Always use 'to' when indicating the listener with the verb 'say'.

Don't confuse with

  • tell

    To give information to someone.

    “He told me the news.”

Use 'say something to someone' but 'tell someone something'.

  • speak

To use your voice to produce words.

    “She speaks three languages.”

Use 'speak' for the physical ability or language skills; use 'say' for specific words.
