Common mistakes

  • The government put a curb of spending.

The government put a curb on spending.

When used as a noun meaning a limitation, 'curb' is followed by the preposition 'on'.

  • We need to curb down our expenses.

We need to curb our expenses.

The verb 'curb' does not take the particle 'down'; it is used directly with the object.

  • She stepped off the curve and crossed the street.

She stepped off the curb and crossed the street.

Do not confuse 'curve' (a bending line) with 'curb' (the edge of a sidewalk).

    He curbed the car.

As a verb meaning to damage a wheel against a sidewalk, 'curb' is transitive and takes a direct object without a preposition.

  • They are trying to curb against inflation.

They are trying to curb inflation.

The verb 'curb' is transitive and takes a direct object; do not use 'against' after it.

Don't confuse with

  • curve

A line or shape that bends continuously and has no straight parts.

“The road has a sharp curve ahead.”

A 'curve' is a shape, while a 'curb' is an edge or a limitation.

  • kerb

The British English spelling for the edge of a road.

    “He tripped over the kerb.”

Use 'kerb' in the UK for the street edge, but always use 'curb' for the verb meaning 'to limit'.

Etymology

From Old French 'courber' (to bend, curve), from Latin 'curvare'. The noun sense of a street edge developed in the 18th century from the idea of a border that encloses or restrains the roadway.
