From Middle English 'uttre' or 'utter', from Old English 'ūterra' ('outer, exterior'), which is the comparative form of 'ūt' ('out'). The sense development from 'outer' to 'absolute/complete' occurred in the 15th century. The verb comes from Middle English 'uttren', meaning 'to put out, show, speak', derived from the adjective or adverb.
