Etymology
Originating in the late Middle English period, 'mass' comes from the Old French 'masse', derived from the Latin 'massa', which in turn comes from the Greek 'maza', meaning a 'barley cake' or 'lump of dough'. The religious sense 'Mass' comes from the Ecclesiastical Latin 'missa', from the phrase 'Ite, missa est' (Go, it is the dismissal), used at the end of the ceremony.
