Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I opened a bill at the bank.

You open an 'account' with a bank, not a 'bill'.

  • She explained the account of the story.

She gave an account of the story.

We typically 'give' or 'provide' an account, not 'explain' it (as 'account' already implies the explanation/description).

Don't confuse with

“Can I have the bill, please?”

An 'account' can refer to a standing arrangement to pay later, while a 'bill' is a specific request for payment.

  • count

    to say numbers in order

    “Can you count to ten?”

'Account' as a verb means to consider/regard, whereas 'count' relates to numbers.

  • Cụm từ 'take into account' (xem xét, tính đến) rất phổ biến trong môi trường làm việc chuyên nghiệp tại Việt Nam khi thảo luận về kế hoạch hoặc giải pháp.
  • Trong kinh doanh, 'account' còn được hiểu là 'khách hàng trọng điểm' (key account).

Etymology

Middle English (in the sense 'counting', 'reckoning'): from Old French acont (noun), aconter (verb), from a 'to' + conter 'count, relate'. The word originally referred to financial reckoning or counting, later broadening to mean a narrative or description (recounting events).
