While 'sanction' means to permit, in casual negative contexts about behavior, 'condone' is the more appropriate and common word.

Don't confuse with

  • sanctuary

Do not confuse 'sanction' (rule/permission) with 'sanctuary' (safety/place).

  • section

Similar spelling, but 'section' is about division, while 'sanction' is about law/approval.

Etymology

Etymology: Late 15th century (denoting a decree): from French sanction, from Latin sanctio(n-), from sancire 'ratify'. Originally the word referred to a formal decree, especially an ecclesiastical one, which led to the dual meanings of 'authoritative permission' and 'penalty for disobedience' (Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
