Derived from the Latin 'mandatum', which is the neuter past participle of 'mandare', meaning 'to enjoin' or 'to commit to one's charge'. This itself stems from 'manus' (hand) and 'dare' (to give), literally 'to put into someone's hand'. It entered English in the early 16th century via French 'mandat'.
