Etymology
From Old English *bannan* 'summon by proclamation', influenced by Old Norse *banna* 'prohibit, curse'. Ultimately from a Germanic root meaning 'speak publicly', related to 'abandon' and 'bandit'. The meaning shifted from 'proclaim' to 'curse' and later to 'prohibit'.
