Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I will see you lately.

    I will see you later.

'Lately' means 'recently' (past). 'Later' is used for future greetings.

  • He arrived more later than me.

    He arrived later than me.

'Later' is already a comparative; do not use 'more' with it.

  • In the later of the book...

In the latter part of the book...

Use 'latter' when referring to the second of two parts, or 'later part' as an adjective.

  • I'll do it after.

    I'll do it later.

'After' usually requires an object (after lunch). Use 'later' when no object is mentioned.

  • See you at later.

    See you later.

'Later' acts as an adverb here; it does not need the preposition 'at'.

Don't confuse with

  • latter

The second of two things mentioned.

“He offered me tea or coffee; I chose the latter.”

Later refers to time; latter refers to order.

  • lately

    Recently.

    “I haven't seen her lately.”

Use 'later' for the future, 'lately' for the recent past.

Etymology

Middle English 'latter', from Old English 'lætra', which is the comparative form of 'læt' (late). It is related to Dutch 'laat' and German 'lass'. The semantic shift to mean 'at a time in the future' solidified in the 16th century.
