Etymology
Mid-19th century: variant of hallo, hullo, which were used to incite dogs during a hunt or to attract attention. Thomas Edison is credited with popularizing 'hello' as a telephone greeting in the late 1870s, as opposed to Alexander Graham Bell's preferred 'ahoy'. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology)
