Etymology
From Middle English 'former', a comparative formation based on Old English 'forma' (first, earliest), derived from Proto-Germanic 'furma'. Cognate with Greek 'protos'. In the sense of 'one who forms', it derives from the verb 'form' plus the agent suffix '-er'. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
