Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I am dreading to go to the dentist.

I am dreading going to the dentist.

The verb 'dread' is usually followed by an -ing verb (gerund), not an infinitive, except in the fixed phrase 'dread to think'.

  • He has a dread to spiders.

He has a dread of spiders.

The noun 'dread' takes the preposition 'of', not 'to'.

  • I dread about the exam.

    I dread the exam.

'Dread' is a transitive verb and takes a direct object without a preposition.

  • She was filled with a dread.

'Dread' as a feeling is usually an uncountable noun, so it does not take the indefinite article 'a'.

  • It was a dreading experience.

    It was a dreadful experience.

Use the adjective 'dreadful' to describe something that causes fear or is very bad, not the present participle 'dreading'.

Don't confuse with

  • fear

an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm

“He was trembling with fear when he saw the bear.”

'Dread' specifically emphasizes the anticipation of something bad happening in the future, whereas 'fear' is a more general response to an immediate or future threat.

  • anxiety

a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome

“She suffers from anxiety before public speaking.”

'Anxiety' is often a generalized feeling of unease, while 'dread' is usually a stronger, more intense fear of a specific upcoming event.

  • Khác với 'fear' (sợ hãi nói chung), 'dread' nhấn mạnh vào sự lo âu, thấp thỏm về một điều CHƯA xảy ra nhưng chắc chắn hoặc có khả năng cao sẽ đến (ví dụ: thi cử, gặp sếp, tắc đường).

Etymology

From Middle English 'dreden', a shortened form of Old English 'ādrǣdan' meaning 'to fear or be afraid'. It is of West Germanic origin, related to Old High German 'trātan'.
