Etymology

Middle English 'worien', from Old English 'wyrgan', meaning 'to strangle'. This was related to the Middle Dutch 'worghen' and Old High German 'wurgian'. Over centuries, the meaning shifted from physical strangling to the figurative sense of 'harassing' and eventually to 'causing mental distress' in the 19th century.
