Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I like it very.

    I like it very much.

'Very' cannot modify a verb directly; it needs 'much'.

  • It is very more expensive.

    It is much more expensive.

Do not use 'very' to modify comparative adjectives; use 'much' or 'far'.

  • He is a very afraid man.

He is a very frightened man.

'Very' is not usually used with 'afraid' when used before a noun; 'very' is common with adjectives that don't start with 'a-'.

  • I very enjoyed the movie.

I enjoyed the movie very much.

Again, 'very' needs 'much' to modify a verb and usually goes at the end of the clause.

  • The very people was there.

    Those very people were there.

When 'very' is used as an adjective for emphasis, it usually needs a determiner like 'the', 'this', or 'those'.

Don't confuse with

  • too

more than what is needed or wanted

“It's too hot to go outside (negative), whereas 'It's very hot' is just a high degree.”

Use 'very' for intensity and 'too' for excessive amounts that cause problems.

  • Trong tiếng Việt, đôi khi 'very' được dịch là 'lắm' hoặc 'quá' đặt ở cuối câu (ví dụ: 'đẹp lắm' thay vì 'rất đẹp').
