Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I can't hardly hear you.

    I can hardly hear you.

Hardly already has a negative meaning. Using 'not' or 'can't' with 'hardly' creates a double negative, which is incorrect in standard English.

  • We hardly never go out.

    We hardly ever go out.

Use 'ever' with hardly, not 'never'. 'Hardly never' is a double negative.

  • He works hardly.

    He works hard.

If you mean he puts in a lot of effort, use the adverb 'hard'. 'Hardly' means he almost doesn't work at all.

  • There was hardly no one there.

    There was hardly anyone there.

Use 'anyone/anybody' after hardly, not 'no one/nobody'.

  • I had hardly finished when did he arrive.

I had hardly finished when he arrived.

After 'hardly... when', use normal word order in the 'when' clause unless starting the sentence with 'Hardly'.

Don't confuse with

  • hard

needing a lot of effort or strength

    “He works hard.”

Do not confuse 'hard' (with effort) with 'hardly' (almost not). 'He works hard' is positive; 'He hardly works' is negative.

Etymology

Middle English: from 'hard' + '-ly'. The original sense was 'with difficulty' (late 13th century). The sense 'scarcely' or 'almost not' developed in the 16th century through the idea of something being done with such difficulty that it almost didn't happen.
