Notes for Vietnamese speakers
- Trong tiếng Việt, 'argument' có hai sắc thái đối lập hoàn toàn: tiêu cực (cãi vã) và tích cực/trung lập (lập luận). Bạn cần xác định ngữ cảnh để chọn từ dịch phù hợp.
- Người Việt thường tránh các cuộc 'argument' (tranh luận nảy lửa) nơi công cộng để giữ hòa khí (harmony), một giá trị cốt lõi của văn hóa Á Đông.
Etymology
From Old French 'arguement' (12th century), from Latin 'argumentum' (evidence, ground, proof), from 'arguere' (to make clear, prove, accuse). The meaning shifted from 'proof/evidence' to 'a process of reasoning' and later 'a disagreement'.
