Except for the rain, it was a good day.

'Excepting' is generally used as a verb or in formal phrases like 'present company excepting', while 'except for' is the standard preposition.

Don't confuse with

  • accept

To receive something or agree to something.

    “I accept your apology.”

Accept starts with 'A' for 'Agree'; Except starts with 'E' for 'Exclude'.

  • expect

To think that something will happen.

“I expect it will rain later.”

Expect is about the future; Except is about exclusion.
