Etymology

From Late Latin 'virtualis', derived from Latin 'virtus' meaning 'virtue, power, or efficacy'. In the 14th century, it referred to possessing certain virtues or powers. By the 17th century, it evolved to mean 'being something in essence or effect, though not in name'. The computing sense emerged in 1959 regarding computer memory.
