Etymology

Mid 17th century: from Latin terrificus, from terrere ‘frighten’. The original sense was ‘causing terror’, but in the late 19th century it began to be used as an intensive meaning 'very great' (similar to 'terrible' or 'awful'), eventually shifting from a negative to a predominantly positive meaning in informal speech.
