Use 'to' before the duration of the punishment when using the verb 'sentence'.

  • He served his sentence to prison.

Use 'in' to describe the location where the sentence is served.

  • Can you help me with this phrase? It has a subject and verb.

    He was sentenced for murder.

This is correct, but do not confuse it with 'sentenced to life' (the punishment).

  • She couldn't speak a sentence.

While 'speak a sentence' is understood, 'say/string a sentence together' is more idiomatic.

Don't confuse with

  • phrase

“‘In the morning’ is a phrase, not a sentence.”

A sentence must be a complete thought; a phrase is just a piece of one.

“A sentence can be made of one or more clauses.”

An independent clause can be a sentence on its own.

Etymology

From Middle English (denoting an opinion or a way of thinking), via Old French from Latin 'sententia' (opinion), from 'sentire' (to feel). In the 14th century, it came to mean a judicial decision and later the punishment itself. The grammatical sense developed in the 15th century from the idea of a 'complete thought'.
