  • I pardon you for stepping on my foot.

'Pardon' as a verb is usually reserved for official legal contexts or fixed polite phrases (like 'pardon me'). It sounds unnaturally formal for minor daily accidents.

'Pardon' is more formal than 'excuse' and is often used for official legal forgiveness or highly polite fixed phrases.

  • forgive

“I forgive you for lying to me.”

'Forgive' is personal and emotional, whereas 'pardon' can be an official government action or a polite conversational convention.
