Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • One of my parent is a teacher.

One of my parents is a teacher.

After 'one of my', you must use the plural form 'parents'.

  • He lives with his parent's.

    He lives with his parents.

Do not use an apostrophe for a simple plural.

  • The parent's meeting is tomorrow.

    The parents' meeting is tomorrow.

If it is a meeting for all parents, the apostrophe goes after the 's'.

  • I was parented by my aunt.

I was raised by my aunt.

While 'parented' is used, 'raised' or 'brought up' is more common when the caregiver is not the mother or father.

  • They are the real parents.

    They are the biological parents.

In sensitive contexts, use 'biological' or 'birth' parents instead of 'real' to avoid suggesting adoptive parents aren't 'real'.

Don't confuse with

  • relative

Any person in your family (aunts, uncles, cousins).

“I have many relatives in Italy.”

Parent refers specifically to a mother or father, not the whole family.
