Etymology

Old English 'earnian' (to deserve, merit, or labor for), derived from the Proto-Germanic 'arnon' (to do harvest work). It is related to the German 'Ernte' (harvest). The sense of receiving money for labor developed from the earlier sense of being worthy of a reward. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology)
