Etymology

Middle English 'skirte', from Old Norse 'skyrta', which originally meant 'shirt'. It is related to the Old English 'scyrte' (the source of 'shirt'). The sense shifted from a general undergarment to a specific garment hanging from the waist by the 14th century. The verbal senses of moving around an edge developed in the early 17th century (Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
