Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

The verb 'reply' is intransitive when referring to a person and requires the preposition 'to'.

  • I am waiting for your reply of my letter.

I am waiting for your reply to my letter.

Use the preposition 'to' after the noun 'reply' when indicating what is being answered.

  • She replied back to the email.

    She replied to the email.

'Back' is often redundant because 'reply' already implies returning an answer.

  • He didn't give a reply.

While 'give a reply' is sometimes used, 'make a reply' or simply using the verb 'reply' is more natural.

  • I'll reply you later.

    I'll reply to you later.

Unlike 'answer', 'reply' cannot take a person as a direct object.

Don't confuse with

  • answer

The most general word for a response.

    “I answered the phone.”

'Answer' is used without 'to' for people/objects (e.g., answer me), while 'reply' almost always requires 'to' (e.g., reply to me).

  • respond

A slightly more formal word for reply.

“The government has not yet responded to the claims.”

Use 'respond' in official or scientific contexts.
