Common mistakes

  • He makes an obscene money.

'Obscene' is an adjective and needs a noun like 'amount' or 'sum' when referring to uncountable nouns like money.

  • The movie was too obscenity.

    The movie was too obscene.

Use the adjective 'obscene' to describe the movie, not the noun 'obscenity'.

    She found the joke obscene.

After verbs like 'find' or 'consider', use the adjective form, not the adverb.

'Obscene' cannot be used as a noun in this context; it must modify a noun.

  • He was arrested for obscene.

After a preposition like 'for', you must use the noun form 'obscenity'.

Don't confuse with

  • absurd

    wildly unreasonable, illogical, or inappropriate

    “The allegations are completely absurd.”

Use 'absurd' for things that are ridiculous or illogical, and 'obscene' for things that are morally offensive or unacceptably excessive.

  • profane

relating or devoted to that which is not sacred or biblical; secular rather than religious

“He was fired for using profane language in the classroom.”

'Profane' specifically relates to disrespecting religion or using swear words, while 'obscene' often relates to sexual offensiveness or extreme excess.

Etymology

From Latin 'obscenus' (offensive, repulsive, ill-omened), of uncertain origin. It is possibly derived from 'ob-' (against) + 'caenum' (filth), or related to 'scaena' (stage), meaning 'off-stage' (referring to violent or unacceptable acts that occurred out of sight in Greek and Roman drama).
