Etymology

Origin: Mid-14th century. From Old French 'plesir' (to please, give pleasure), from Latin 'placere' (to be acceptable, be pleasing). In English, the word originally meant 'to be agreeable to'. The use as a polite particle in requests (interjection) developed from the phrase 'if it please you' (14th century). Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology.
