Etymology

Etymology: The noun sense 'fold of a garment' comes from Old English 'læppa', of Germanic origin, related to Dutch 'lap'. The sense 'upper legs of a seated person' developed in the 14th century from the idea of the flap of a skirt where things are held. The verb sense (water/drinking) is from Old English 'lapian', of imitative origin, mimicking the sound of liquid hitting a surface or being drunk (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
