The word 'host' in English comes from three distinct sources that merged: (1) Noun (someone who receives guests) from Old French 'oste', from Latin 'hospes' (guest/host). (2) Noun (a multitude) from Old French 'ost', from Latin 'hostis' (enemy, later an army). (3) Noun (bread in Eucharist) from Old French 'oste', from Latin 'hostia' (sacrificial victim). All merged in Middle English (13th-14th centuries). Sources: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology.
