  • Cần đặc biệt lưu ý sự khác biệt giữa 'desert' (sa mạc) và 'dessert' (món tráng miệng) vì người học Việt Nam thường nhầm lẫn do cách viết gần giống nhau.
  • Thành ngữ 'just deserts' thường bị viết sai thành 'just desserts' ngay cả bởi người bản xứ, người học cần chú ý để đạt điểm cao trong các kỳ thi viết.

Etymology

From Old French 'desert', from Latin 'desertum' (a thing abandoned), the neuter past participle of 'deserere' (to abandon), from 'de-' (undoing) + 'serere' (to join). The noun sense of 'land' developed from the idea of an abandoned, uninhabited place. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
