Etymology

Etymology: Early 15th century, from Old French 'targette', a diminutive of 'targe' meaning 'shield'. The word is of Germanic origin and was originally used to describe a light shield used by infantry. The sense of an object to be aimed at in shooting practice developed in the 18th century, leading to the modern figurative sense of a goal or objective.
