Etymology

Late Middle English: from Old French dependant, from dependre ‘to hang down’, from Latin dependere, from de- ‘down’ + pendere ‘to hang’. Originally, the noun and adjective were spelled the same; in modern British English, 'dependant' is commonly used for the noun, while 'dependent' is used for the adjective.
