Etymology

Originating in the late Middle English period (late 14th century), 'defensive' comes from the Old French 'defensif' or Medieval Latin 'defensivus'. This is derived from the Latin 'defens-', the past participle stem of 'defendere', meaning to ward off or protect. The psychological sense of being 'overly sensitive to criticism' developed much later, in the 19th century.
