Etymology

Late Middle English: from Old French assess-, stem of the verb assesser, or from Latin assess- 'sat by' (in the office of a judge), from the verb assidere (from ad- 'at, towards' + sedere 'sit'). Originally meaning 'to sit beside a judge to assist', the sense shifted to 'fix the amount of a tax/fine' and later 'estimate the value of'.
