Common mistakes

  • They alleged him to steal the money.

They alleged that he stole the money.

Allege is typically followed by a 'that' clause, not object + infinitive directly in active voice.

  • He is alleged stealing the car.

He is alleged to have stolen the car.

In the passive voice, use 'alleged to + infinitive' (e.g., alleged to be, alleged to have done).

Don't confuse with

  • accuse

to say that someone has done something wrong or is guilty of something

    “He was accused of murder.”

'Accuse' is direct (accuse someone OF something), while 'allege' is often used in passive structures or with 'that' clauses regarding unproven facts.

  • claim

to state that something is true or is a fact, typically without providing evidence

“He claims to own the car.”

'Allege' is more formal and typically implies wrongdoing or legal contexts, whereas 'claim' is broader.

  • Từ 'alleged' (tính từ) thường được dịch là 'bị cáo buộc' hoặc 'được cho là' để tránh rủi ro pháp lý về tội vu khống khi đưa tin trên báo chí Việt Nam.

Etymology

Middle English (in the sense 'cite, produce in court'): from Old French alleguer, from Latin allegare 'dispatch, cite', from ad- 'to' + legare 'depute'. The current meaning arose in the 17th century.
