Notes for Vietnamese speakers
- Trong văn hóa Việt Nam, 'proud' thường mang nghĩa tích cực (tự hào) khi nói về thành tích của con cái hoặc đất nước.
- Tuy nhiên, khi dùng để chỉ tính cách cá nhân, nó có thể mang nghĩa tiêu cực là 'kiêu ngạo' hoặc 'sĩ diện'.
- Cấu trúc 'proud of' rất phổ biến, nhưng người Việt thường nhầm lẫn dùng 'proud with' hoặc 'proud about' do dịch trực tiếp từ tiếng Việt.
Etymology
Etymology: Late Old English 'prud', 'prut', probably from Old French 'prud', an oblique case of the adjective 'prouz' meaning 'brave' or 'valiant'. This originated from the Late Latin 'prode', meaning 'advantageous' or 'profitable'. The sense shifted from 'valiant' to 'having a high opinion of oneself' and later to 'feeling satisfaction in achievements'.
