Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • What are you trying to infer?

What are you trying to imply?

If you are the one speaking/suggesting, you use 'imply'. Use 'infer' when you are the one drawing a conclusion from someone else's words.

  • She infered the answer.

Verbs ending in a single consonant preceded by a single stressed vowel double the consonant before adding -ed or -ing.

The standard preposition used with infer to indicate the source of information is 'from'.

  • The data infers a change in climate.

The data implies a change in climate.

While 'infer' is sometimes used this way, in academic English, inanimate data 'implies' or 'suggests' a conclusion; the researcher 'infers' it.

Don't confuse with

  • imply

To suggest something without saying it directly.

“The reporter implied that the mayor was corrupt.”

The speaker implies; the listener infers. Think of 'imply' as sending a message and 'infer' as receiving it.
