Why you are late?

In direct questions, the auxiliary verb must come before the subject.

In indirect questions, use statement word order (subject + verb).
The reason why is because...
The reason is that...
'The reason why' already implies the cause; adding 'because' is redundant.
I don't know why to do it.
I don't know why I should do it.
'Why' cannot be followed directly by a 'to-infinitive' when the subject is the same; use a clause instead.
He asked why for I was crying.
He asked why I was crying.
Do not use 'for' after 'why' when asking for a reason.
Don't confuse with
- because
Used to give the answer/reason, whereas 'why' is used to ask for it.
“Why are you late? Because the bus broke down.”
Why = Question; Because = Answer.

Notes for Vietnamese speakers
- In Vietnamese, 'why' can be translated as 'tại sao', 'vì sao', or 'sao'. 'Tại sao' is more formal and direct.
- When asking elders 'why', Vietnamese speakers often add 'ạ' at the end of the sentence to show respect (e.g., 'Tại sao ạ?').
- In informal speech, 'sao' is often used at the end of a sentence for emphasis, like 'Làm thế để làm gì sao?' (Wait, why do that?).
Etymology
Derived from Old English 'hwī', which was the instrumental case of 'hwæt' (what). It stems from the Proto-Indo-European root '*kwo-', an interrogative base (Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
