Etymology
Originates from the mid-16th century, from Middle French 'pilote', based on Italian 'pilota', an alteration of 'pedota' (late Greek 'pēdotēs'), meaning 'steersman', from 'pēdon' (oar/rudder). The sense shifted from maritime navigation to aviation in the early 20th century.
