Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I like almost people.

    I like most people.

'Almost' is an adverb and cannot directly modify a noun like 'people'. Use 'most' for 'the majority of', or 'almost all' to mean 'nearly all'.

  • She almost is ready.

    She is almost ready.

The adverb 'almost' usually comes after the verb 'to be'.

  • I almost have finished.

    I have almost finished.

In compound tenses, 'almost' goes between the auxiliary verb and the main verb.

Don't confuse with

  • most

the majority of; nearly all of

    “Most people like pizza.”

Use 'almost' (adverb) to mean 'nearly'. Use 'most' (determiner) to mean 'the majority'. Do not say 'almost people'.

  • mostly

    mainly; generally

“The students are mostly from Europe.”

'Mostly' means 'mainly', while 'almost' means 'nearly'.

Notes for Vietnamese speakers

  • Người Việt thường dùng 'suýt' thay cho 'almost' khi nói về những sự việc không may mắn sắp xảy ra (ví dụ: suýt ngã).
  • Trong bối cảnh thời gian hoặc khoảng cách, 'gần' hoặc 'sắp' là những từ tương đương tự nhiên nhất.
  • Cần lưu ý phân biệt 'almost' (gần như) và 'mostly' (chủ yếu là) vì người học Việt Nam hay nhầm lẫn hai từ này.

Etymology

Old English eallmæst, from eall 'all' + mæst 'most'. The sense development indicates 'mostly all' shifting to 'very nearly' by the Middle English period.
