Etymology
Originating in the late 16th century, 'thrilled' is the past participle of 'thrill'. The verb 'thrill' comes from Middle English 'thrillen' (to pierce), a variant of 'thirlen', from Old English 'thyrlian'. The sense evolved from a literal physical piercing to a metaphorical 'piercing' of the emotions, resulting in a sudden wave of feeling. Cited from the Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology.
