Etymology
From the adjective 'polite' + the suffix '-ness'. 'Polite' originates from Latin 'politus', meaning 'polished' or 'refined', which is the past participle of 'polire' (to polish). The suffix '-ness' is of Old English origin, denoting a state or quality.
