A paradox requires a contradiction that seems impossible but might be true, not just a simple difference or contrast.

Don't confuse with

  • oxymoron

    “'Deafening silence' is an oxymoron.”

An oxymoron is usually just two words placed together, while a paradox is a complete statement, situation, or concept.

  • irony

the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite

“The irony of the situation was that the fire station burned down.”

Irony is about expectations being subverted, whereas a paradox is about two seemingly impossible truths existing at once.
