Etymology

From Middle English 'misterie', derived from Old French 'misterie', which comes from Latin 'mysterium'. This is rooted in the Greek 'mustērion' meaning 'secret rite or doctrine', from 'mustēs' (an initiated person) and 'muein' (to close the eyes or mouth).
