Etymology
Middle English 'dette', from Old French 'dete', based on Latin 'debitum' (something owed), the past participle of 'debere' (to owe). The 'b' was inserted in the 15th and 16th centuries to make the spelling look more like the Latin original, though it was never pronounced. Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology.
