Etymology

Etymology: The noun sense of 'pointed end' comes from Middle English 'tippe', of Low German or Dutch origin. The sense of 'gratuity' or 'advice' appeared in the 18th century, possibly from the verb 'tip' meaning 'to give or pass' in underworld slang (Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology).
