Etymology

From Middle English 'theires', a double possessive formed from the possessive adjective 'their' (of Old Norse origin 'þeira') plus the pronominal suffix '-s' (modeled after 'ours', 'yours'). First appearing in the 13th century to distinguish the absolute pronoun from the attributive adjective 'their'.
