  2. 2To give something to somebody or do something for them in return for something that they have done for you.social

    • I felt that I had been amply repaid for my exertions.
    • I'd just like to be able to repay her kindness.

Chú ý cấu trúc 'repay somebody FOR something' (đền đáp ai vì điều gì).

  3. 3If something repays your attention, interest, study, etc., it is worth spending time to look at it.academic

Avoid mistakes

Common mistakes

  • I will repay to you the money tomorrow.

I will repay you the money tomorrow.

Do not use 'to' before the person being repaid when using the ditransitive structure.

  • He repaid back the loan.

    He repaid the loan.

'Repay' already means to pay back, so adding 'back' is redundant.

  • How can I repay for your help?

How can I repay you for your help?

You must include the object (the person) before 'for' when talking about returning a favor.

  • The book repays to read.

    The book repays reading.

When meaning 'worth doing', 'repay' is followed by a noun or gerund, not an infinitive.

  • She is repaying her mortgage to the bank.

    She is repaying her mortgage.

While not strictly ungrammatical, it is more natural to simply say 'repaying a mortgage' without specifying 'to the bank' unless necessary for context.

Don't confuse with

  • prepay

to pay for something before you receive it

“You can prepay for your rental car online.”

re- means back/again, pre- means before

  • refund

to give money back to a customer because they are not satisfied or returned an item

“The store refunded my money for the broken vase.”

Refund is usually for purchases; repay is for loans or favors.
