Etymology
Port (harbor) comes from Old English 'port', derived from Latin 'portus' (harbor/gate). Port (wine) is named after Oporto (Porto), the Portuguese city from which it was exported. Port (left side) replaced 'larboard' in the 19th century to avoid confusion with 'starboard' during shouted commands, referring to the side facing the port (dock).
