Notes for Vietnamese speakers
- Trong tiếng Việt, 'country' có hai nghĩa chính rất khác biệt: 'quốc gia' (văn cảnh chính trị/địa lý) và 'nông thôn/quê' (văn cảnh đời sống).
- Khi nói 'về quê', người Việt thường dùng 'go back to my hometown' thay vì 'go to the country' trừ khi họ thực sự ám chỉ vùng ngoại ô.
- Dòng nhạc 'Country music' thường được giữ nguyên tên tiếng Anh hoặc gọi là 'nhạc đồng quê' tại Việt Nam.
Etymology
Middle English: from Old French contree, from medieval Latin contrata (terra) '(land) lying opposite', from Latin contra 'against'. The sense development went from 'the land spread out before one' to 'a specific region' and eventually 'nation'.
